To launch our SSDB project in conjunction with Earth Day, the children were introduced to the theme, "Caring for Nature and the Environment," through engaging discussions, picture talks and hands-on experiences. They explored why Singapore is known as a Garden City and discussed the importance of plants in keeping our environment clean, cool and beautiful. Through meaningful conversations, the children shared their observations of where they have seen plants, reflected on how plants help people and animals and considered the impact of having fewer trees and green spaces.
The children also took part in a sensory exploration of dried herbs such as lemongrass, lavender, basil and rosemary, using their senses to observe and smell each plant while learning about their many benefits. They discovered how plants help to clean the air, repel insects, support cooking and health and create a calming environment. These experiences encouraged the children to appreciate the important role that plants play in our daily lives.
To connect their learning with meaningful action, the children discussed how they could care for the environment within their own school community by creating and maintaining a garden. They brainstormed what they could plant, how they could care for the plants each day and the tools needed to help them grow. As a class, the children collaborated to create and decorate a SSDB pledge, promising to take small but meaningful actions to care for the environment. The launch concluded with the children proudly sharing their pledge and celebrating the beginning of their SSDB journey, reinforcing the message that small actions can lead to a big impact.
