To bring the children’s learning into meaningful action, we invited parents to join us for a hands-on gardening workshop. This experience provided an opportunity for children and families to work together while reinforcing our SSDB objectives of developing an appreciation for nature, understanding the importance of caring for our Earth, practising the 3Rs, and taking responsibility for the environment through small, meaningful actions.

During the workshop, the children and parents planted a variety of seeds that the children had previously explored during the SSDB Launch in conjunction with Earth Day. Some families also contributed seeds to the garden, making the experience a meaningful collaborative effort between home and school. As they planted, the children recalled what they had learnt about the needs of plants and how plants contribute to our lives and environment.

The children were also excited to use the DIY gardening tools they had made earlier using recycled materials donated by their families. This allowed them to see how everyday materials could be reused and given a new purpose, reinforcing the importance of reducing waste and caring for our environment. Through this hands-on experience, the children were able to put their learning about the 3Rs into practice while working alongside their parents.

To extend the learning, parents and children created cards together to express their gratitude and say “thank you” to plants for providing us with fruits and vegetables. This encouraged the children to reflect on how plants support our daily lives and to develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the resources it provides.

To encourage continued responsibility and care for the environment, children and teachers created a weekly gardening roster. They will take turns visiting the garden to water, observe and tend to the plants, learning that caring for nature is not a one-time activity but an ongoing responsibility.

Through this gardening journey, the children experienced how small actions such as reusing materials, planting seeds, caring for plants and expressing gratitude towards nature can contribute to a greener and more sustainable community. With the support of their families, they are learning that everyone has a part to play in caring for our Earth.
