Following the launch of our SSDB project, the children began preparing for their upcoming intergenerational experiences.

Through stories, conversations and class discussions, they explored what it means to grow older and considered how seniors may feel and what they might need. The children were encouraged to think beyond simply “helping” seniors and to recognise the importance of spending time together, listening, communicating respectfully and making others feel valued.

These conversations helped the children connect the project to seniors they already knew, particularly their own grandparents, while preparing them to meet and interact confidently with others in the community.

The children then turned their learning into little acts of care.

They put thought and effort into preparing for the experiences ahead — drawing and creating, decorating gifts, and practising songs that they could share with the seniors. As they worked, teachers continued conversations about why they were doing these things and how their actions could help someone feel welcomed, appreciated and happy.

The preparation was therefore more than making a gift or learning a song. It gave the children an opportunity to think about another person's feelings and to prepare themselves to connect with someone from a different generation.

As the children prepared their gifts, songs and words of greeting, anticipation began to build for the experiences ahead.

For our K1 children, this meant spending meaningful time with their grandparents during the upcoming Neighbourhood Walk. For our K2 children, it meant stepping beyond the familiar school environment to meet seniors at Lion Befrienders Active Ageing Centre.

With thoughtful preparations, growing confidence and caring hearts, the children were ready to put what they had learnt into action and begin making connections across generations.
