Connecting Across Generations: Our K2 AAC Visits

After weeks of learning and preparation, our K2 children were ready to take their SSDB journey beyond the classroom. In collaboration with Lion Befrienders, the children visited an Active Ageing Centre (AAC), where they had the opportunity to meet and spend time with seniors in the community.

For some children, approaching and interacting with someone they had never met before was a new experience. With the greetings, songs and acts of care they had practised in school, the children were encouraged to take that first step — to say hello, introduce themselves and begin making a new connection.

Across the visits, the children and seniors connected through simple games designed for everyone to enjoy together. They took part in Beach Ball Volleyball, Stacking Cups and Sit-Down Basketball, creating many opportunities to communicate, cooperate and encourage one another.

The activities became a natural way for the children to interact with the seniors. Rather than focusing on winning, they learnt to take turns, cheer one another on and enjoy being part of a shared experience.

Through play, the initial unfamiliarity gradually gave way to smiles, conversations and moments of connection between the generations.

Beyond the games, some of the most meaningful moments came from the children's simple interactions with the seniors — greeting them, speaking with them, sharing a song and presenting the gifts they had thoughtfully prepared.

These moments gave the children opportunities to practise showing respect and consideration in an authentic setting. They learnt that connecting with someone does not always require a long conversation or elaborate activity. Sometimes, offering a smile, listening, encouraging someone or simply enjoying an activity together can be just as meaningful.

The experience allowed the children to put the values they had been discussing in school into action with members of their wider community.

As each session came to an end, the children bid farewell to the seniors after an experience that extended their learning beyond the walls of the kindergarten.

The visits provided our K2 children with authentic opportunities to interact with an older generation, build confidence in communicating with others, and consider how their actions can help another person feel welcomed and valued.

Most importantly, the children discovered that despite differences in age, there are many ways for generations to come together — through play, conversation, music and kindness.
