A Walk to Remember: K1 Neighbourhood Walk with Grandparents

As part of our SSDB intergenerational journey, our K1 children invited some very special companions to join them on a Neighbourhood Walk — their grandparents!

Stepping beyond the classroom together provided an opportunity for the children and their grandparents to slow down, explore the familiar neighbourhood and simply enjoy one another's company. Along the way, they walked, talked, observed their surroundings and shared little moments together.

For the children, the experience was not just about where they went, but who they were walking alongside.

As they explored the neighbourhood, the walk created natural opportunities for conversations between the two generations. Grandparents could share their observations and experiences, while the children excitedly shared what they noticed along the way.

Through these simple exchanges, the children practised listening, communicating and showing consideration towards their grandparents. More importantly, they experienced how meaningful it can be to spend time together, listen to one another and learn across generations.

Sometimes, building a connection can begin with something as simple as taking a walk together.

The Neighbourhood Walk gave our K1 children an opportunity to appreciate their grandparents not only as family members who care for them, but also as companions with stories, experiences and knowledge to share.

Through these shared moments, we hoped to strengthen children's appreciation for the older generation and encourage them to continue making time for their grandparents beyond the project.

It was a simple walk, but one filled with conversations, connections and memories made together. ❤️
