Building on their exploration of environmental care, the children turned their attention to our hydroponics system. They harvested the existing Chinese cabbage, carefully removing the plants and separating their roots from the growing sponges. After washing and rinsing their harvest, the children began a new growing cycle by planting lettuce and kale, allowing them to experience the journey from harvesting one crop to nurturing the next.
Over the following weeks, the children continued caring for and observing their new plants. They watched closely as seeds developed into sprouts and gradually grew larger, recording the changes they noticed through drawings in their plant growth journals. Through this ongoing experience, the children discovered that caring for living things requires patience, consistency and time.
As the lettuce continued to flourish, it eventually became ready for harvest. The children returned to the hydroponics system to harvest the plants they had watched grow and cared for over time. Seeing the growing cycle through from planting to harvest gave them a meaningful sense of accomplishment and a greater appreciation for how food grows.
