In celebration of Parents’ Day and as part of our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) journey, M.Y World@Compassvale Ancilla hosted a Family Fun Sports Carnival – Celebrating Families and Sustainability. The event brought together children, parents, and teachers for an enjoyable afternoon of active play, family bonding, and learning about caring for the environment.

Families participated in a variety of fun sports activities, including Bowling, Bean Bag Toss, Ball Relay, Step & Move Across the Hall, and Hoop Jumping. Parents and children worked together, encouraged one another, and enjoyed completing the different challenges as a team. Sustainability was incorporated into the carnival through the creative use of recycled and reused materials. Plastic bottles and milk cartons were transformed into bowling pins and activity markers, while old newspapers, fabric scraps, and socks were reused to make bean bags. Cardboard boxes were repurposed into stepping boards, targets, and signage. Through these activities, children discovered that everyday materials can be given a new purpose instead of being thrown away.

Children collected stamps as they completed the different activity stations, making their carnival experience even more engaging and exciting. The celebration also extended sustainability to the tokens given to the children. Instead of purchasing new items, the tokens were handmade using recycled materials. Recycled paper was creatively transformed into bookmarks, while used bottle caps were decorated and repurposed into colourful keychains. These meaningful keepsakes showed children that everyday discarded materials can be given a new life through creativity and reuse.

This further reinforced the message that small actions, such as reusing and repurposing materials, can contribute towards a greener tomorrow. The activities also provided opportunities for children to practise gross motor skills such as rolling, throwing, balancing, stepping, hopping, and jumping, while spending meaningful time with their families.

The celebration served as a meaningful reminder that small sustainable actions can make a difference. By reusing and repurposing everyday materials, children and families experienced how caring for the environment can be incorporated into play and daily life.
