As part of our Young Guardians of Our Environment journey, our little eco-heroes embarked on an exciting recycling experience to learn about the importance of keeping our surroundings clean and practising responsible waste disposal.
Using educational resources provided by the Public Hygiene Council (PHC), children were introduced to the characters from the Ash and the Supermons story. Through storytelling, colouring activities and discussions, they learnt about good public hygiene habits, the importance of keeping shared spaces clean, and how littering can affect our environment.
For our Early Years children, learning focused on building simple and meaningful habits. They practised disposing of rubbish into the bins in both classroom and outdoor settings, helping them understand that everyone has a part to play in keeping their environment clean.
For our preschoolers, the learning was extended beyond the classroom. After exploring the story and discussing responsible waste disposal, the children visited a nearby hawker centre to observe public hygiene practices and took part in a litter-picking activity. They examined the items they had collected and sorted them into recyclable and non-recyclable materials, before placing the recyclable items into the appropriate recycling bins. This helped them understand how waste can be managed responsibly.
Using binoculars provided by NParks, the children also became little environmental observers, looking closely not only at insects and nature around them, but also at the cleanliness of their surroundings. This encouraged them to notice litter, reflect on how human actions affect the environment, and think about what they could do to help keep shared spaces clean.
Through these hands-on experiences, children strengthened their understanding that keeping the environment clean is a shared responsibility. This recycling journey helped them grow as Young Guardians of Our Environment, showing them that simple actions such as disposing of rubbish properly, picking up litter, observing their surroundings and recycling correctly can all contribute towards a cleaner and greener Singapore.
