Our SSDB project, “Young Guardians of Our Environment”, began with a meaningful celebration of World Water Day. As the opening activity of the project, the whole school took part in age-appropriate hands-on experiences to learn about the importance of water, how we use it in our daily lives, and simple ways we can conserve it.

For our Early Years children, learning took place through familiar daily routines. Children washed fruits in a basket and cleaned toy animals using a basin of still water, sponges and simple washing tools. Through these experiences, they developed an understanding of the importance of water in our everyday lives, especially for cleaning and keeping things hygienic. Instead of leaving the tap running, teachers encouraged them to use the water that had already been collected. This helped children begin to understand that water is precious and that we should only use what we need to avoid unnecessary wastage.

Our preschoolers extended their learning through more purposeful water-conservation activities. They worked together to wash a toy car using a bucket of water instead of running water, learning that a small amount of water can still get the job done. Children also transferred water into watering cans before watering the plants, encouraging them to use water carefully and purposefully. During another activity, they practised washing their own plates using minimal water without keeping the tap running.

Through these simple everyday experiences, children discovered that every drop counts and that small changes in their habits can help conserve water. We ended our World Water Day celebration by singing “Turn the Tap Off” together, reinforcing the important message of saving water in a fun and memorable way.

As our first SSDB experience, World Water Day helped children begin their journey as Young Guardians of Our Environment, learning that even small actions, such as turning off the tap and using only the water they need, can make a positive difference in caring for our planet.
