To conclude our project, our partner, The Rasa Project, organised a food education workshop for our children and parents. Families had the opportunity to explore Singapore-grown herbs and vegetables, allowing children to use their five senses to build language, curiosity and meaningful connections with food.
The children were actively engaged as they touched, smelled and explored the different herbs and vegetables while learning more about where their food comes from. The hands-on nature of the workshop provided children with opportunities to develop their confidence and curiosity towards food in an enjoyable and meaningful way.
The workshop also introduced children and families to composting. Together, they explored how food scraps can be given a new purpose instead of being thrown away. The children were encouraged to look for mealworms hidden in the soil, adding an element of fun and discovery as they learned about the living organisms found within compost.
As part of the experience, children also had the opportunity to create their own composting setup and bring it home. This helped to extend their learning beyond the classroom and encouraged families to take small, practical steps towards reducing food wastage at home.
Through the “Little Food Heroes” project, children were given meaningful opportunities to explore food, make healthier choices, appreciate local produce and understand that their everyday actions can contribute towards reducing food wastage and caring for the environment. The project also strengthened the partnership between the centre, children and families by providing opportunities for learning to continue beyond the classroom.
