As part of our ongoing SSDB Project, our N2 children developed a sense of responsibility in caring for the environment around them.
By tapping into their prior knowledge of what plants need to grow, the children learned about the important role plants play in our neighbourhood. They discovered that plants provide us with clean air to breathe, food to eat, and shelter for both people and animals.
Putting their learning into action, the children put on their gardening hats and planted their own bak choy seeds. They took responsibility for watering their plants each day and observed the changes as their seedlings began to grow, nurturing both their plants and their appreciation for nature.
Apart from learning how to keep our neighbourhood green, our class also took on the role of little environmental rangers by helping to keep their surroundings clean.
Wearing their gloves and armed with a strong sense of responsibility, the children eagerly searched for litter during their nature walk, doing their part to care for the environment. As they cleaned, their curiosity and empathy shone through with thoughtful comments such as, "Why do people throw rubbish here?" and "Someone could get hurt from such rubbish!"
Through this meaningful hands-on experience, the children developed a greater appreciation for caring for shared spaces and recognised that everyone has a part to play in keeping our environment clean and safe. At the end of the activity, they proudly expressed the difference they had made as observed from the amount of litter they have collected, feeling a great sense of satisfaction in contributing to a cleaner neighbourhood.
