SSDB Launch Party: Hawker Visit & Meet-the-Authors Experience

Sunshine Kids Care Centre @ Tampines Blk 519A proudly kicked off our SSDB Project with an exciting and meaningful Hawker Centre Visit and Meet-the-Authors Experience in collaboration with the Singapore Book Council.

Earlier today, our children visited Changi Village Hawker Centre for a hands-on learning experience, discovering how our local community helpers work and contribute to our community in a real hawker centre setting. The children had the opportunity to engage in respectful conversations with the hawkers, fondly greeting and interacting with the uncles and aunties while completing simple tasks assigned to them. Through this experience, they gained a deeper appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our hawker heroes.

Our Nursery, Kindergarten 1, and Kindergarten 2 children also had a wonderful time participating in a fun and interactive storytelling session with Ms Far’ain Jaafar and Mr Quek Hong Shin. The children were captivated by Ms Far’ain Jaafar’s Satay and Mr Quek Hong Shin’s The Marvellous Sugee Cake.

These stories complemented our current term’s learning journey on “Community Helpers”, providing the children with meaningful opportunities to explore local culture, food, stories, and the important roles that community helpers play in our everyday lives.

Following our engaging reading sessions, our K1 and K2 children had a wonderful time identifying the different ingredients used to make delicious satay. They then brought the story to life through imaginative role play, pretending to prepare and make their very own satay!

Afterwards, our N2 to K2 children expressed their creativity by illustrating and writing about their favourite moments from the reading sessions. With the wonderful support of our parent volunteers, the children were able to share their ideas and memories through their artwork and writing.

It was a fun and meaningful experience that encouraged the children to read, imagine, create, and learn together!

To show our heartfelt appreciation to our wonderful authors, our children creatively crafted a giant bookmark inspired by the stories as a special token of gratitude.

We would also like to extend our deepest thanks to our amazing parent volunteers for generously sharing their precious time with us. Your invaluable support, encouragement, and involvement helped make this Meet-the-Authors experience a fun, meaningful, and memorable one for our children.

It was a delightful experience that sparked the children’s imagination and love for reading. Thank you for being such an important part of our children’s learning journey and for helping us nurture their love for books!
