SSDB Excursion to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery

As part of their Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) 2026, children visited the Sustainable Singapore Gallery to deepen their understanding of sustainability and discover how everyone can play a role in caring for the environment. Building on their previous learning from WonderBot and the Time Travel Capsule and their exploration of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, the excursion provided children with meaningful opportunities to connect their classroom learning to real-life environmental initiatives in Singapore.

Throughout the visit, the children explored a variety of interactive exhibits that introduced them to Singapore's efforts in creating a clean and sustainable environment. One of the highlights of the excursion was a large sculpture made entirely from recycled materials. Children were fascinated by how everyday items that would normally be thrown away had been transformed into a beautiful work of art. They eagerly identified many of the recycled materials used in the sculpture, including plastic bottles, bottle caps, cardboard, cans, and other recyclables, proudly recalling that they had also sorted and reused these materials during their classroom activities.

Children were also introduced to the different recycling bins and learnt how proper waste separation allows recyclable materials to be processed and made into new products. Many children confidently identified which items belonged in each bin, drawing on their previous experiences from the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle learning stations. They shared that properly recycling helps reduce waste and keeps Singapore clean for everyone.

As they explored further, children learned about the importance of planting trees and caring for green spaces. Through the interactive displays, they discovered how trees provide shade, clean the air, support wildlife, and make Singapore a healthier and more pleasant place to live. Children enthusiastically shared their experiences of visiting parks and gardens and recognised that looking after plants is another way to help care for the environment.

A key learning point during the excursion was discovering how Singapore transforms used water into clean water through NEWater. Children were amazed to learn that water, which was once dirty, can be carefully treated and purified until it is clean enough to be used again. Many children immediately linked this learning back to WonderBot and the Time Travel Capsule, recalling their earlier discussions about why the Singapore River looked dirty in the past and how much cleaner it has become today. They recognised that Singapore's commitment to protecting the environment, together with responsible actions from its people, has helped improve the quality of its waterways and create a cleaner, greener nation.

The excursion strengthened the children's understanding that sustainability is achieved through both community efforts and individual actions. By connecting their classroom experiences with real-world examples, children gained a deeper appreciation of how reducing waste, recycling, conserving water, and caring for nature all contribute to shaping a cleaner and more sustainable Singapore. This meaningful learning experience reinforced the SSDB 2026 theme, "With Every Child We Shape Tomorrow," empowering children to recognise that their everyday choices can make a positive difference to the environment.
