Observing and Recording: Our Food Sustainability Journey Our young learners have been discovering that food does not simply appear on our plates. It begins as a tiny seed and needs care, patience and lots of love to grow! Through our food sustainability journey, the children have been actively involved in growing, observing and documenting their plants, lettuce and chye sim.

Watching Our Plants Grow The children eagerly checked on their plants regularly, observing with excitement as the tiny seedlings slowly developed into healthy, leafy crops. Each visit to the garden became an opportunity to discover something new. They looked closely at the size, colour, shape and texture of the leaves, noticing how these changed as the plants grew bigger, taller and stronger. Through these observations, the children began to appreciate that plants need time, care and the right conditions to grow. The garden was also home to many small creatures. The children spotted worms and ants moving through the soil and became curious about the important roles these little creatures play in the garden. They were also surprised and delighted to discover a few mushrooms growing alongside their crops. These unexpected findings encouraged the children to observe their surroundings more carefully and sparked conversations about the different living things that can be found in a garden.

Look, Draw and Describe! With cameras in hand, the children became little garden photographers, eagerly capturing photographs of their plants at different stages of growth. Each photograph provided a snapshot of their gardening journey and allowed the children to revisit and compare how their plants had changed over time. As they looked through the photographs, they noticed details such as new leaves appearing, stems growing taller and plants becoming fuller and stronger. The children also recorded their observations through drawing. They carefully sketched their plants, paying close attention to the shapes, colours and details of the leaves and stems. As they drew, they shared what they noticed and described the changes they had observed. These experiences encouraged the children to look more closely at their plants and communicate their observations through different forms of expression.

By photographing, drawing, observing and describing their plants, the children developed important skills such as making careful observations, comparing changes, expressing their ideas and recording information. Through their ongoing documentation, they were able to see how their efforts in the garden contributed to the growth of their plants, making their learning both meaningful and memorable!
