Learning Empathy and Responsibility Through Tamagotchi Care

Throughout our SSDB project, ‘Voices of Care; Hearts of Action,’ our little innovators have been immersed in various hands-on activities that emphasize the importance of caregiving, especially toward those who care for them.

One of the key experiences planned involved each child taking responsibility for a Tamagotchi, a digital pet that requires constant attention and care. The children took turns caring for the Tamagotchi, feeding and nurturing it to keep it ‘alive.’ When their Tamagotchi ‘died,’ they passed it to the next child, who then took over its care. Throughout the activity, the children eagerly helped one another, teaching their friends how to use each function and when to perform certain tasks, like feeding or cleaning up after their digital pet.

They enjoyed the process immensely, not only having fun but also learning important lessons in empathy, responsibility, and teamwork. This exercise reinforced the understanding that caring for others is an ongoing, shared responsibility, and the children learned how to support one another in the process.

Additionally, our community outreach component deepened these lessons. Families for Life contributed an activity that allowed the children to create personalized gifts for their grandparents. Each child decorated a door hanger and wrote a heartfelt message to their grandparents, offering a token of love and appreciation. This simple yet meaningful gesture encouraged the children to reflect on the special role their grandparents play in their lives and allowed them to express their gratitude in a creative way.

These activities, combined with other initiatives like Grandparents’ Day and visits to the Senior Care Centre, have reinforced the SSDB theme and our project’s aim in a tangible way, to spread the message that caring for others is a fundamental part of being a compassionate individual.
