We embarked on a new sub-category of our SSDB project. This week, children learnt to care for the environment. The class began the week by listening to a storybook reading of the story, ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’.

The book basically talks about a plastic bag’s journey through the ocean and how one little trash can affect marine life.

Next, children understood why plastic is nearly indestructible as they tried their hands on breaking one. They learnt the meaning of decomposing through this brief activity.

“It’s so difficult to tear this plastic!”, one of the children exclaimed. They found that the harder they pulled, the tougher it is to tear it apart.

A video was then shown of the current situation in most of the Earth’s ocean, filled with plastics and trash. Children were affected when they see their favourite sea creatures being the victims of human’s actions. They realised the importance of saving our seas. We came up with 3 slogans to put on the posters that children will be creating.

‘Say No to Water Pollution’ , ‘Stop Littering into the Sea’ & ‘Recycle Your Plastic Products’ are the three slogans children came up with for their posters.

The next day, children used their ‘neighbourhood walk’ time to go around advocating about this matter. Our children were shy at first in sharing about the cause, but grew more confident as time went on.

The children showing great efforts in sharing about what they have learnt to residents in the area.

We stumbled upon a recycling bin during our neighbourhood walk. Children recalled the items that can be put into these bins.

For the rest of the week, the class collectively decided on creating crafts out of recyclables. They will be creating them throughout the week. Look forward to our next post! ☺️
