Making a Difference: Keeping Our Environment Clean
As part of our SSDB project, our centre, My First Skool @ Whampoa South, partnered with the Public Hygiene Council to organise an engaging and meaningful Parents’ Day event at West Coast Park. The event focused on helping our children and families understand the importance of keeping our shared environment clean and appreciating the hard work of our cleaners.
We began the day with a Park Clean-Up Activity. Using litter-picking tools kindly borrowed from the CleanPod, our children and parents worked together to pick up litter around the park. Through this hands-on activity, everyone experienced first-hand how much effort is needed to keep our surroundings clean.
To make learning fun, we also organised interactive games. In the Tray Return Game, children practised placing used utensils neatly on a tray and returning it to the designated tray return area. During the Ocean Ball Pit Clean-Up, children had to search for and remove litter from the ball pit, putting themselves in the shoes of cleaners who work hard to keep our public spaces clean.
The activities gave everyone an opportunity to see cleanliness from a cleaner’s perspective. While we may sometimes think that dropping a small piece of litter is harmless, every piece of litter adds to the workload of our cleaners. Choosing to throw our rubbish into the bin, even when it may be slightly farther away, is a simple but meaningful way we can play our part.
Through this event, we hope our children have developed a greater appreciation for the hard work of our cleaners and understand that keeping our environment clean is a shared responsibility. As our neighbourhood belongs to everyone, let us encourage one another to do our part and keep our surroundings clean, beautiful and enjoyable for all.
