Star Learners @ Tampines West collaborated with Families for Life (FFL) to conduct a 5 Love Languages Parent-Child Workshop for our families. The 1.5-hour workshop provided parents and children with opportunities to strengthen their relationships through meaningful and interactive activities based on the five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch. We planned and facilitated different activity stations where parents and children could experience each love language.

Love Language 1: Physical Touch Families explored how appropriate physical gestures can communicate affection, comfort and connection. Parents and children chose ways to greet or show affection to one another, such as giving a high-five, fist bump or hug, while also recognising individual preferences and personal boundaries.

Love Language 2: Acts of Service Through a fun charades activity, parents and children explored different actions that can be done to help and care for one another. This encouraged families to recognise that helping with everyday tasks and doing something thoughtful for another person can be a meaningful way of expressing love.

Love Language 3: Quality Time Parents and children reflected on what quality time meant to them and drew pictures on a whiteboard to represent what spending quality time together looked like for their family. They shared and talked about their drawings with one another, encouraging meaningful conversations about the moments and activities they enjoy doing together.

Love Language 4: Receiving gifts Parents and children experienced how a simple and thoughtful gift can be a way of showing that someone is valued and remembered. At this station, participants received an envelope and decorated it with stickers, reinforcing that the meaning and thought behind a gift can be more important than its value.

Love Language 5: Words of Affirmation Through a beanbag toss activity, parents and children were encouraged to share positive and encouraging words with one another. They practised expressing appreciation, encouragement and affection verbally, demonstrating how simple phrases such as “I love you,” “I am proud of you,” or “You did a great job” can help children feel supported and valued.

Through our collaboration with Families for Life, families were able to experience the five love languages in simple and practical ways that could be incorporated into their everyday routines at home. The workshop also provided parents with an opportunity to reflect on how their child may prefer to receive affection and how different family members may express care in different ways.

Overall, the collaboration strengthened our partnership with families and the wider community by creating a meaningful space for parents and children to connect, communicate and enjoy quality time together. Through practicising the love languages at home, the children can show care towards their loved ones.

In addition, we celebrated Grandparents' Day with the grandparents and children in our school, creating meaningful opportunities for them to spend quality time together and strengthen their bonds. Through interactive games, joyful dance performances, and taking memorable photographs together, families created precious memories that they can look back on and cherish for years to come.
