Our SSDB project focused on Sustainability, with the aim of helping children understand the importance of caring for the environment through reducing, reusing and recycling. Throughout the project, children participated in meaningful hands-on experiences that connected environmental awareness with their everyday lives.
The project was launched with our Sustainability Day, where children and families participated in activities promoting environmental awareness. One of the highlights was a recycled fashion show, where children showcased creative outfits made from reused and recyclable materials. Community partners were also involved, providing opportunities for children to learn about sustainability beyond the classroom.
We also collaborated with Go Green Go, using their educational resources to introduce and reinforce the concept of reusing materials. Through discussions, stories and hands-on activities, children learnt that everyday items do not always have to be thrown away and can be given a new purpose.
Children applied this learning by working collaboratively to transform recycled materials into various 2D and 3D artworks, including a 3D neighbourhood, flowers and a whale made from plastic bottles. These experiences integrated language and literacy, numeracy, creativity and fine-motor development while encouraging children to communicate, solve problems and work together.
The project also supported children’s social and emotional development, particularly teamwork, respect, responsibility and appreciation for others’ contributions. Their learning was extended to the wider community through collaborations with community partners and the display of their sustainability artworks at Bedok Public Library.
Overall, the project helped children recognise that simple actions such as reducing, reusing and recycling can make a positive difference to the environment.
