As part of the launch of our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project, which focuses on strengthening intergenerational relationships, the children participated in a meaningful session with elderly participants from Program Keluarga Syifa’ (PKS), also known as the Syifa’ Family Programme. PKS is an active ageing programme by An-Nur Mosque that provides seniors with opportunities to remain socially connected, engaged, and active within the community.
The session began with a performance by the children for the elderly participants. This provided the children with an opportunity to showcase their confidence, joy, and talents while connecting with the older generation. Through this experience, the children learnt that simple gestures, such as singing, performing, and spending time together, can bring joy and happiness to others.

Following the performance, the children and elderly participants took part in a hands-on activity where they created cup telephones using cups and string. The activity encouraged interaction and communication between the two generations as they worked together and explored how they could speak and listen to one another using their handmade telephones.

The activity also demonstrated that age differences do not have to be a barrier to communication. Instead, they can be overcome through creative approaches that encourage both generations to share their ideas, express their opinions, and engage with one another.

The shared experience provided meaningful opportunities for the children and elderly participants to interact, communicate, and enjoy one another’s company. Through this SSDB launch, the children developed a greater appreciation for the elderly and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of respect, kindness, and meaningful connections when building relationships across generations.
