Small Hands, Big Thanks! Appreciation for Community Helpers & Environmental Sustainability Through Recycling

“Small Hands, Big Thanks!” is a Start Small Dream Big project designed to help children develop appreciation and respect for community helpers, particularly police officers, while learning about environmental sustainability through recycling. Through this project, the children gained a better understanding of the important work police officers do every day and how they help to keep our community safe.

As part of the project, our K2 children collected old CDs from home and transformed them into DIY recycled cup coasters as appreciation gifts for police officers serving our community. Besides participating in activities in school, the project also included a meaningful parent-child component. Children and their parents worked together at home to create recycled CD cup coasters using unwanted CDs and recyclable materials such as unwanted cloth, fabric scraps, cardboard, and other suitable recycled materials. The children were encouraged to decorate the coasters with appreciation messages such as “Thank You” and “Thanks for Keeping Us Safe” to express their gratitude to the police officers.

To further deepen the children's understanding of community helpers, police officers were invited to visit our preschool and share with the children about their roles and responsibilities. They introduced their duties, including helping to keep the community safe, assisting people in need, and maintaining public safety. During the visit, the children had the opportunity to present their handmade coasters as appreciation gifts to the police officers and their team. They also performed an appreciation song to thank the officers for their service to the community.

Through this meaningful experience, the children learnt that small acts of kindness and appreciation can make a positive difference. The project promoted gratitude, community involvement, family participation, and environmental sustainability while providing children with a meaningful real-life learning experience.
