Our K2 children embarked on this year’s Start Small Dream Big project with the theme Saving Electricity. The project began when the children explored the different electronic gadgets and appliances they often use at home and in school. This sparked their curiosity about where electricity comes from, why it is important, and how we can use it wisely. To build their understanding, the children engaged in a mind-mapping session where they shared their ideas on how to save electricity. Together, they brainstormed alternatives to using electricity such as:

Playing outdoors at the park instead of watching TV or using tablet

Reading books and drawing instead of using electronic games

Sweeping the floor with a broom instead of using a vacuum cleaner

Opening the windows for fresh air and light instead of switching on fans and lights

Spending family time with board games, puzzles, or storytelling instead of screen time

The children also had the opportunity to interact with students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, who visited our centre to conduct a sharing session. The students explained simple ways of saving electricity, such as switching off lights and fans when not in use, unplugging chargers, using natural sunlight during the day, and turning off taps to conserve water (since electricity is also used in water treatment). This visit provided the children with real-life tips that they could easily practice at home and in school.

Later on, the K2s were invited to visit Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s campus. The highlight of the trip was flying aeroplanes made from styrofoam materials. This exciting activity showed the children that fun and engaging play does not always require gadgets or electricity, and they can enjoy meaningful play through simple, creative activities.

As part of parental involvement, families were invited to create toys using recycled materials together with their children. This activity encouraged creativity, problem-solving, and family bonding, while also reinforcing the idea of reusing and repurposing items instead of relying on battery-operated or electronic toys. Children proudly brought their creations to school and shared them with their friends, inspiring one another with innovative ideas.

Through this project, the K2 children not only learned about saving electricity but also developed a sense of responsibility towards the environment. They discovered that even small actions, like turning off unused appliances or choosing outdoor play, can make a big difference.
