As part of our efforts to encourage children to care for nature and the environment, parents were actively involved in the project by contributing clean recycled materials from home, such as plastic bottles, paper bags, boxes and other reusable items. Their contributions provided children with a variety of materials to explore and also strengthened the connection between learning at home and in the preschool.

The recycled materials contributed by parents were incorporated into the children’s loose parts play and art experiences. Children were given opportunities to explore, create and use their imagination as they transformed these everyday materials into their own creations. These open-ended experiences supported their creativity and problem-solving skills while helping them understand that items that might usually be thrown away can be reused and given a new purpose.

Through these experiences, children were introduced to the importance of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3Rs). They learnt that simple actions, such as reusing materials, reducing waste and recycling whenever possible, can contribute towards protecting the environment.

Parents’ participation played an important role in reinforcing this learning beyond the classroom. By collecting and contributing recycled materials together with their children, families supported the children in recognising that caring for the environment is a shared responsibility. Through these small but meaningful actions, children developed greater awareness of how they, together with their families, can contribute towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
