Our SSDB 2026 project, Into the Hawkerverse: Together for Tomorrow, Empowering Young Hearts, took our Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2 children on a meaningful journey to discover and celebrate Singapore's rich hawker heritage. Through engaging storytelling, hands-on experiences, creative art activities, role-play, and a learning journey, the children explored the history and significance of hawker centres while recognising hawker aunties and uncles as valued community heroes.
Throughout the project, the children developed a deeper appreciation of Singapore's multicultural identity and learnt how hawker centres brought people from different backgrounds together. They practised responsible citizenship by demonstrating positive dining etiquette, such as queueing patiently, using polite manners, keeping the environment clean, and clearing their own bowls and trays after meals. Through creating Hawker Hero Badges, packing Care Packs, and expressing gratitude to hawker aunties and uncles, the children demonstrated kindness, empathy, respect, and appreciation for the contributions of community helpers.
At Little Footprints Preschool @ Thomson, we believed that meaningful learning occurred through authentic experiences that connected children to the people and places around them. Guided by the theme "Together for Tomorrow, Empowering Young Hearts," the project nurtured confident, caring, and socially responsible learners who appreciated Singapore's unique hawker heritage and recognised that even small acts of kindness could make a positive difference in the lives of others.
