As part of our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) initiative, we partnered with the Public Hygiene Council (PHC) to engage our children and families in learning about the importance of keeping our environment clean and taking responsibility for our shared spaces.

Through this collaboration, the children learnt that keeping Singapore clean begins with simple everyday actions, such as disposing of litter responsibly, returning trays after meals and practising good hygiene habits. With the support and resources provided by PHC, these important messages were reinforced through meaningful and age-appropriate learning experiences.

The children were introduced to PHC's story and its mascots, learning about the different characters and what they represent in caring for our environment and keeping our community clean.

Building on their learning, the K2 children worked in groups to design posters to share the messages they had learnt. Through their discussions and designs, they considered how they could encourage others to practise good habits and play their part in caring for the environment.

Here is an example of a poster that they came up with:

The N2 children took their learning a step further by creating their very own Supermons. Inspired by the PHC mascots, they thought about different environmental problems and designed new characters with special features and abilities to help solve them.

Greenemon – Protector of Trees and Plants Greenemon was created to protect trees, plants and the natural environment. It has a loud bell speaker to tell people to stop cutting down trees, wings that allow it to fly around and check on forests, and magical eyes that can scan the environment for problems.

Checkemon – Recycling Checker Checkemon helps everyone check whether their rubbish can be recycled. Its seven eyes allow it to inspect items efficiently, while its wings help it travel around to assist others. It also has a loud bell to remind everyone to "check and double-check" before throwing something away, as well as a pair of tongs at its back to pick up recyclable items.

Oceanmon – Protector of the Ocean Oceanmon was created to protect marine animals and the ocean environment. It can cut and collect fishing nets to prevent overfishing and has an "oil sucker" that removes oil pollution from the sea. A spinner at its back helps it swim quickly through the ocean, while its communicator allows it to communicate with sea creatures.

Through creating their Supermons, the children went beyond identifying good environmental habits to thinking creatively about real environmental issues and possible solutions. The activity gave them an opportunity to apply what they had learnt from PHC while developing their own ideas about how they can care for the environment and inspire others to do the same.
