Inspiring Sustainability Through the VIASTA Community Event

Children's learning about sustainability extended beyond the preschool through their participation in the VIASTA Community Event, providing authentic opportunities to apply their learning in real-world contexts. This meaningful experience reflects the SSDB focus on Sustainable Living, Community Partnership, Environmental Stewardship, and Children's Agency.

In preparation for the event, families became active partners in children's sustainability journey by collecting recyclable materials, discussing environmentally responsible choices at home, and contributing resources that enriched the children's investigations. This home-school partnership reinforced the importance of reducing waste and demonstrated that sustainability begins with everyday actions. Using the donated materials, children engaged in inquiry, discussion, and creative exploration as they transformed recyclable items into meaningful artworks that promoted environmental conservation. Teachers intentionally facilitated the learning by encouraging children to share ideas, solve problems, make design decisions, and reflect on how recyclable materials could be given a new purpose.

Families also shared that children began reminding household members to recycle, conserve water, and care for plants at home, demonstrating that learning had extended beyond the preschool into everyday family practices. This demonstrated how children's growing understanding of sustainability was influencing everyday decisions and behaviours beyond the preschool environment.

At the VIASTA Community Event held at the Simei MRT Viaduct, children proudly showcased their artwork to members of the public. Seeing their creations displayed within the community validated their efforts and enabled them to experience how their ideas could influence others to care for the environment. This authentic platform strengthened children's confidence, sense of purpose, and identity as capable contributors.

MY World @ Simei also organised a Pebble Art booth, inviting visitors of all ages to create artwork using natural materials. Children actively participated alongside their families and members of the community by sharing ideas, encouraging creativity, and engaging visitors in conversations about appreciating nature and making sustainable choices. The interactive booth strengthened relationships between the preschool and the wider community while promoting shared responsibility for environmental conservation.

As part of our commitment to sustainable living, MY World @ Simei also donated solar lights to support environmentally friendly practices within the shared community space. The donation of solar lights provided children with a tangible example of renewable energy in action. Teachers used this opportunity to engage children in conversations about how sunlight can be converted into energy and how communities can make environmentally responsible choices to reduce their impact on the environment.

The children's reflections highlighted the impact of the experience: "Our artwork can make the garden beautiful and help the Earth." "We can use old things to make something new." "I like making pebble art with my family." "I feel happy because everyone can see our work."

Through creating recycled artwork, engaging the community through the Pebble Art booth, and contributing solar lights, children experienced how their ideas and actions could make a positive difference. These authentic experiences supported the SSDB outcomes by strengthening children's creativity, communication, collaboration, confidence, environmental awareness, and civic responsibility while empowering them to become active participants in creating sustainable communities.

As educators, we were inspired to witness children embracing their role as environmentally responsible citizens whose everyday actions contributed meaningfully to their community. Moving forward, the preschool will continue strengthening community partnerships while providing authentic opportunities for children to lead sustainability initiatives, ensuring that environmental stewardship remains embedded in everyday learning experiences.
