Through our SSDB project, “Growing Sustainability, Growing Together,” children learned to care for their environment and community through simple hands-on activities. They took part in clean-up, gardening, recycling, and sustainability activities while working with community partners. Children also created handmade gifts and thank-you messages to show appreciation to cleaners, construction workers, and farmers. Through these experiences, children learned that small actions can grow into positive changes when we work and care for one another together.
Our SSDB project, “Growing Sustainability, Growing Together,” provided meaningful opportunities for children, families, and community partners to take action towards a more sustainable environment. Through recycling, upcycling, reusing, and collaborative learning experiences, children moved beyond learning about sustainability to putting sustainable practices into action. Through hands-on activities, children learned that everyday materials could be reused and given a new purpose instead of being thrown away. They developed greater awareness of reducing waste, sorting recyclables, reusing resources and caring for their surroundings. At the same time, they strengthened their creativity, problem-solving skills and confidence as they transformed recyclable materials into useful and meaningful creations.
Families extended the learning beyond the centre by contributing recyclable materials and participating in activities such as the SSDB Launch and Parents’ Day upcycling workshop, Racial Harmony Day, “A Story Comes Alive” parental workshop and home-based transportation project. Our collaboration with MOE Kindergarten (MK) also provided opportunities for children to explore, share, and learn about sustainability with others. These experiences strengthened family engagement and encouraged a shared responsibility for caring for the environment.
Most importantly, children learned that sustainability begins with small choices and grows through collective action. From sorting recyclables and reusing everyday materials to creating, sharing and caring for their environment, children experienced how their actions could make a difference. With the support of families and community partners, these small actions helped children become responsible, creative, and caring contributors to their community.
Together, we brought “Growing Sustainability, Growing Together” to life not just through activities, but through shared learning, meaningful action, and a growing commitment to care for our environment and one another.
