Empathy in Action: M. Y World @ Woodlands x Down Syndrome Association (DSA)

M.Y World @ Woodlands is proud to host a befriending session with the Down Syndrome Association Singapore! This meaningful interaction offers our children a wonderful opportunity to be kind and build friendships, be bold in showcasing their empathy, and empower their ability to be inclusive. Aligned with our mission to nurture character and inspire learning in each child, this initiative also reflects our vision, which is to be a child-care centre of choice that builds strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

Through this engagement, our K2 children had the opportunity to interact with beneficiaries from DSA, fostering genuine friendships and embracing the inclusivity regardless of ability. Every interaction served to instil empathy, kindess, and inclusion with the learners.

In this befriending session, we began with an energising warm-up led by our K2 children. They then teamed up with the DSA beneficiaries to play a series of engaging ball games that encouraged teamwork and coordination. From passing the ball in a circle to an overhead relay in lines, and rolling the ball underneath to one another, every activity was met with laughter and enthusiastic participation. A lively freeze game added to the fun, allowing lots of laughter and excitement from everyone. Then we ended the session with a gentle cool-down, allowing everyone to wind down together and reflect on the joyful shared experience.

We wrapped up the session with a Token of Appreciation of the artworks made by all the children in our school, given to every person with Down Syndrome. The beneficiaries showcased gratefulness for the stunning pieces of art through smiles and thank yous being said to the K2 children! Much appreciation to the staff at Down Syndrome Association as well, for allowing the school to collaborate for such a meaningful day.

On that note, it was heartwarming and inspiring to see how our children warm up to the DSA beneficiaries that was connected through play. Our K2s showed empathy, patience, and genuine excitement to play together with their friends and the learners with Down Syndrome, demonstrating the impact of inclusive experiences. With the said experiences, we collectively learnt that we are capable of forging friendships with everyone despite our abilities.
