Embracing inclusivity - creating awareness and empathy on dementia

The SSDB initiative was launched to promote awareness and empathy towards disabilities among our students. The prelaunch activities aimed to create a supportive and inclusive environment, encouraging children to understand and appreciate the experiences of individuals with disabilities.

Prelaunch Activities:

Provocation Table: A wax toy display representing people with disabilities sparked curiosity and conversation.

Inclusive Storybooks: Teachers engaged with books emphasizing inclusion and teamwork.

Videos and Experiential Activities: Real-life examples of resilience and adaptability were showcased.

“Walk in My Shoes” Game: Children simulated visual impairment to foster empathy.

Understanding Dementia:

Introduction to Dementia: Teachers explained dementia as an illness leading to psychomotor and cognitive disabilities.

Dementia-focused Storybooks: Age-appropriate stories introduced the concept of dementia.

Teachers explained to children the simple term of understanding dementia is forgetfulness, and it is ok to be absentminded sometimes.

Learning Journey to Punggol Regional Library:

Awareness through Exploration: Children saw community support for individuals with disabilities.

Calming Pod: A special area for overwhelmed individuals demonstrated inclusive design.

Conclusion:

The SSDB launch significantly impacted children’s understanding and empathy towards individuals with disabilities.
