Embarking on the journey of recycling

Upon knowing that the K2 children will be involved in Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project, teachers facilitated a discussion with them on the area they would like to embark on.

After much discussion, the children showed interest in the area of “recycling” and would like to embark on that for their SSDB project as they want to play a part in protecting the Earth.

And, without further ado, the children started collecting recyclable at home. The children showed enthusiasm for the project by bringing in different recyclables such as toilet rolls, shampoo and body wash bottles, plastic bottles, milk tins and metal cans to school everyday.

25 April 2018, Wednesday

Teachers brought the children out for a walk at the neighbourhood to look for recyling bins.

*Children spotted the blue recycling bin at the vicinity of their school. They identified the four types of recyclables - Plastic, Glass, Paper, Metals that go inside this blue recycling bin.*

*Children also spotted the green trash bin and were trying to see things that were thrown inside it.*

*Children were curious about the bag of things placed beside the trash bin and identified recyclables such as plastic bottles and metal cans inside it.*

*Children spotted a huge green bin and identified some recyclables such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and metal cans inside it. They also spotted food and fallen leaves inside. Children put on their thinking hats as they wonder if this is a trash bin or recyling bin.*

This outdoor learning allows children to learn about the different types of bins at their neighbourhood. From there, the children learnt about the things that should go inside the respective bins.

This outdoor learning also created an awareness to children that if everyone does not practise the good habit of recycling, there will only be more trash created and accumlated each day. Soon, there will not be enough land to bury all the trash.

The children went to the vicinity of their school to look for recyclables.

*The children were looking for recyclables at an open area nearby their school.*

*The childred found recyclables such as metal cans at the open area.*

*The children also look for recyclables outside their school.*

*Beside looking for recyclables, the children also helped to pick up litter they have found.*

*Teachers then gathered the children back at the void deck and shared about the things they have picked from the open area and outside their school.*

*The children then place the recyclables such as metal cans and bottle cap that they have collected into the blue recycling bin.*

*Children also learnt that not all items that they have collected can be recycled. Items such as string and styrofoam cylinder should go into the trash bin instead.*

*At the end of the outdoor learning and activity, children were all exhausted but happy that they managed to play a part in recycling and at the same time keeping their neighbourhood clean.*
