Throughout our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) Project, “Connecting Hearts, Bridging Generations,” children from Infants to K2 participated in meaningful experiences that encouraged them to develop respect, empathy and appreciation towards the elderly. Through age-appropriate activities, the children were given opportunities to build confidence in interacting with people from different generations, learn about different cultures, traditions and family experiences, and understand how small acts of kindness can positively impact others.
The project also supported children in developing a sense of belonging and responsibility towards the community, while helping them understand that every generation has valuable knowledge, stories and experiences to share. Most importantly, the children experienced meaningful intergenerational connections and learnt that caring for others can be expressed through simple gestures, shared experiences and spending quality time together.
To consolidate the children's learning and provide an authentic opportunity for them to put these values into practice, we concluded the project with a Grandparents Day Celebration, bringing together our children, grandparents and parents.
Infants – Baby Yoga with Grandparents
For our infants, grandparents joined their grandchildren for a baby yoga session, with parents also providing support throughout the activity. The gentle session created a warm and meaningful opportunity for grandparents and infants to connect through touch, movement, eye contact and shared moments of joy.
This experience extended the SSDB project's focus on building intergenerational relationships by allowing grandparents to actively participate in their grandchildren's experiences. Through simple movements and interactions, grandparents and infants were able to develop familiarity and connection in a relaxed environment.
The session also highlighted that intergenerational bonding can begin from the earliest years of life. With the support of parents, grandparents were encouraged to engage with the infants at their own pace, creating opportunities for affection, communication and shared enjoyment. It also strengthened the partnership between families and the preschool community, reinforcing the importance of working together to nurture children's sense of belonging.
Playgroup to K2 – Intergenerational Zumba
For our preschoolers from Playgroup to K2, the children participated in a lively Zumba session with their grandparents, dancing together to some of their grandparents' favourite oldies.
The session provided a joyful platform for children and grandparents to interact, laugh and enjoy one another's company. By dancing to songs that held meaning for the older generation, children were given an opportunity to learn more about their grandparents' interests and experiences, while grandparents were able to share a part of their own memories and culture with the children.
This directly supported the SSDB project's objective of helping children understand that every generation has knowledge, stories, memories and experiences worth sharing. The children also gained confidence in interacting with older adults and experienced first-hand how shared activities can bridge generational differences.
The Zumba session further demonstrated how small acts of inclusion and togetherness can make others feel valued and appreciated. By inviting grandparents to participate rather than simply watch, the children experienced the importance of including and caring for others, strengthening their empathy, respect and appreciation for the elderly.
Consolidating Our Learning
The Grandparents Day Celebration provided a meaningful conclusion to “Connecting Hearts, Bridging Generations.” Rather than learning about intergenerational relationships only through classroom discussions and activities, the children were able to experience these relationships in real life.
From the gentle connection between infants and grandparents during baby yoga to the energetic sharing of music and movement between preschoolers and their grandparents, each experience reinforced the message that care, kindness, respect and connection can be expressed in simple everyday ways.
The celebration also strengthened the partnership between children, families and the preschool, creating a shared community where different generations could connect, learn from one another and celebrate their relationships together.
