Caring for Animals: Our Choices, Their Homes

The experience started with a Mystery Box activity, where children eagerly uncovered clues such as leaves, water, and animal figures to begin thinking about nature and the basic needs of living things. This hands-on introduction encouraged questioning, prediction, and deeper discussions about animals and their environments. To further develop their understanding, children were introduced to the story This Tree Is Just for Me!, which guided them through important conversations about sharing natural resources, respecting habitats, and recognising that animals depend on humans to make responsible choices. Through storytelling, children explored empathy and social awareness as they reflected on how animals might feel when their homes are disturbed.

Bringing imagination into action, the children then designed and created their own animal puppets, carefully choosing animals they connected with while learning about where these animals live and what they need to survive. These puppets became more than crafts—they became learning companions that helped children engage in habitat role-play, movement games, and discussions about wetlands, forestlands, grasslands, and drylands. Through active play, sounds, and gestures, children experienced what it might feel like to live as animals in different environments, preparing them both emotionally and intellectually for their upcoming field trip.

After a series of meaningful pre-briefing activities designed to spark curiosity, build understanding, and prepare them for real-world exploration, we decided to head to Curiosity Cove to find out more. As a captivating prelude to our trip, the children watched an engaging Ranger Buddies video. This immersive preview instantly hooked their attention, setting the stage for what to expect and introducing them to the mission ahead. By the end of the pre-briefing phase, our children were not only excited but also equipped with knowledge, empathy, and purpose as they prepared to step into the world of Curiosity Cove.

Filled with anticipation, the children arrived at the Zoo Education Centre to begin their exploration journey, "Curious Creatures: Who Lives Here?". Through the staff's lively explanations, our Joyful Learners discovered different natural habitats, including forests, wetlands, deserts, and grasslands. The most exciting moment for everyone was undoubtedly getting up close to observe and touch the taxidermy animal specimens! Stepping into the role of Empathetic Thinkers under the guidance of the staff, the children gently touched the various animal specimens. They carefully felt the different textures of fur, feathers, and scales, while pondering how these wonderful body coverings help animals survive and camouflage in the wild

This experience of perspective-taking allowed the children to learn to see the world from an animal’s point of view, fostering a deep respect and empathy for living things. During the interactive Q&A session, everyone eagerly raised their hands, beautifully demonstrating the qualities of Respectful and Confident Communicators. Through this hands-on activity integrated with the NEL framework, the children expanded their knowledge through play as they explored the mysteries of nature together. It was truly a journey of love, responsibility, and discovery, planting the seeds of wildlife conservation in the hearts of our little explorers!

After the workshop, our Joyful Learners had an amazing time exploring the diverse habitats of Curiosity Cove, from the lush forestlands and wetlands to the open grasslands and drylands. Through hands-on exploration and imaginative play, the children actively discovered how animals move, live, and adapt to their environments. Our little explorers climbed across web structures, balanced on stepping stones, and even practiced camouflaging themselves in the wild! They also took on exciting missions—like shaking the vines at the Singing Tree and searching for animal shelters—which encouraged them to observe their surroundings and think about wildlife safety. Throughout the journey, the children showed immense enthusiasm, curiosity, and teamwork, beautifully completing every mission together!

Following our visit to SSDB "Curiosity Cove", the children engaged in an extension craft activity titled "Where Do Animals Live?", where they created their very own shoebox habitats. To begin, they recalled the animals they had observed during the trip, drawing and cutting out the ones that left the deepest impression to further consolidate their knowledge of animal features. Next, they expressed the animals' living environments by designing a natural backdrop on paper plates and inside shoeboxes, adding elements like the sky, trees, and terrain. Finally, they used super-light clay to secure their cut-out animals onto the paper plates and within their shoebox dioramas, making their artwork more three-dimensional and lifelike. Throughout this process, the children not only developed their fine motor skills and creativity but also deepened their understanding of animal habitats, fostering a genuine care for nature and the environment.

As a follow-up from our Curiosity Cove experience, the children completed a My Animal Poster together with their families. During the Show and Tell session, the children confidently shared about the animals they drew, their habitats, and ways we can help to protect them. They listened attentively to one another’s presentations and showed curiosity as they learnt about different animals and environments from their friends. Through this sharing experience, the children developed greater awareness of the importance of protecting animals and caring for their habitats. They also began to recognise how their own actions and choices can play a part in caring for living things and the environment around them.

While this Show and Tell session marks the official conclusion of our SSDB project, our journey does not stop here. We will continue to educate our children and weave these vital lessons of love, responsibility, and conservation into our daily learning, ensuring our little protectors keep caring for the world around them.
