SSDB Write-up Caring Beyond Our Community: Learning About E-Waste with ALBA

As part of our SSDB learning journey, the children explored the meaning of kindness beyond caring for ourselves, our families and the people in our community. We wanted the children to understand that being kind can also extend to the environment and the world around us. Through meaningful experiences and conversations, the children learnt that even small actions can make a difference in keeping our environment clean, safe and healthy.

To deepen their understanding, the children were introduced to ALBA, a waste collection organization that supports the proper collection and disposal of electronic waste, or e-waste. During the session, the children were introduced to the concept of e-waste and learnt that items such as old electronic gadgets and devices should not simple be thrown into our regular rubbish bins. The session helped the children understand that electronic items contain materials that need to be handled and disposed of appropriately. When e-waste is not disposed of correctly, it can have a negative impact on our environment.

The learning experience was made interactive through the use of visuals, videos and a question-and-answer session. The children were encouraged to think about the electronic items they see and use in their daily lives and to share their ideas about what happens when these items are no longer needed. Questions were posed to the children to encourage them to recall what they had learnt and to express their understanding in their own words. The older children showed particular interest and enthusiasm during the Q&A session, eagerly responding to questions and sharing their thoughts. Although some of our younger children may not yet have fully understood the concept of e-waste disposal, they were able to participate in the session, observe the visuals and videos, and begin developing an awareness that waste needs to be managed responsibly.

The learning did not end with the ALBA presentation. A week later, an ALBA e-waste collection container was delivered to our centre. This provided an authentic opportunity for the children to put their learning into action. Teachers, parents and children were encouraged to bring suitable unwanted electronic items from home and place them into the collection container for proper disposal. By involving our families and the wider school community, the children could see that caring for the environment is a shared responsibility and that everyone can play a part.

This experience allowed our SDB learning to move from simply talking about kindness to taking meaningful action. The children learnt that kindness can be shown not only through helping and caring for people, but also through the choices we make for our environment. Through the ALBA initiative, they were given the opportunity to connect their classroom learning with real-life actions and understand that responsible disposal of e-waste is one way we can show care for our planet.

Most importantly, the experience encouraged the children to see themselves as active contributors to their community. By learning about e-waste and participating in the collection initiative, they discovered that even young children can contribute to positive change. Through simple actions such as making responsible choices about waste, sharing what they have learnt with their families and encouraging others to do the same, the children took meaningful steps towards becoming environmentally responsible and caring members of our community.
