Our K2 children continued the “Arts of Diversity” theme with batik. Batik is a traditional textile technique that uses wax and dye to create beautiful patterns on a piece of fabric such as cotton, silk or linen. Before going for the actual workshop, the children did their own painting after they were introduced to batik. They drew patterns of shapes, rainbows and flowers etc on paper and filling it using watercolours.

We have partnered with Kamal Arts Gallery where children were shown a demonstration of the process of batik art. Our instructor of the day draws with wax on a piece of cloth using a tool called canting which holds the hot wax. The children also experienced donning the traditional costumes made with batik prints.

Each child was provided with a pre-waxed cloth with batik design. They thoroughly enjoyed adding their own colours with the dyes provided. Backed in school, the children looked back at the patterns they created before the workshop and observed that there were some similarities such as the flowers, leaves and animals.

Through this workshop, children learnt more about the Malay batik art and how people have used this technique to produce beautiful pieces of art. Even the children were able to create their own masterpiece!
