Start Small Dream Big 2026 (SSDB) – The Salvation Army (Re:Nue Campaign) and Mandai Wildlife Reserves (Mandai Action for Wildlife Programme)

This year, the children of Agape Little Uni Upper Serangoon embarked on our Start Small Dream Big journey with a shared commitment to sustainability. Through meaningful, hands-on experiences, they explored the importance of caring for our environment by learning about upcycling, recycling, and wildlife conservation. As young changemakers, the children discovered that simple everyday actions could make a positive impact on the world around them. Their curiosity, creativity, and compassion inspired them to become responsible stewards of the Earth, proving that even the smallest efforts can contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

SSDB Launch – Donation Drive with The Salvation Army Singapore

We kickstarted our Start Small Dream Big journey by partnering with The Salvation Army's Re:Nue initiative and inviting children and their families to take part in a meaningful donation drive. Families generously contributed pre-loved clothing, books, toys, and household items that were still in good condition, helping to extend the life of these items instead of sending them to the landfill. To widen the impact of the initiative, we also reached out to our neighbourhood by putting awareness posters at nearby lift lobbies, encouraging residents to support the donation drive. This provided an opportunity for the children to see how community participation can strengthen a meaningful cause. Through this initiative, the children gained a deeper understanding of the importance of reusing resources, reducing waste, and showing care for both the environment and the community. By working together with our families and the wider community, we demonstrated that every small act of generosity and sustainability can create a meaningful and lasting impact.

To deepen the children's understanding of the donation process, representatives from The Salvation Army visited our preschool to share how donated items are sorted, repurposed, and redistributed to support individuals, families, and environmental sustainability. The children were excited to see The Salvation Army's truck arrive with its iconic red Re:Nue donation bins. Taking turns, each child proudly placed their donated items into the bins, actively participating in the donation process. This hands-on experience helped them make meaningful connections between their actions and the positive impact they can have on the community and the environment, reinforcing that every donation is an opportunity to give, care, and reduce waste.

June Holiday Programme

During our internal June Holiday Programme, the children participated in a series of engaging, hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding of climate change, recycling, and upcycling. Through stories, discussions, games, and creative projects, they explored how everyday choices can help protect our planet and reduce waste. Excess donated items from the donation drive were thoughtfully repurposed into meaningful learning materials and art creations, allowing the children to experience upcycling firsthand. By transforming pre-loved items into something new and useful, the children discovered that objects can be given a second life through creativity and imagination, reinforcing the importance of making sustainable choices in their daily lives.

The Infant children were introduced to the concept of recycling through simple and meaningful play experiences. Using recyclable materials, they participated in hands-on activities such as creating sensory bottles, allowing them to explore different textures and sounds while learning that everyday items can be reused in creative ways.

The Playgroup and Pre-Nursery children explored the meaning of recycling by identifying the recycling logo and learning about items that can be given a second life. They also practised upcycling by using wool from soft toys to create simple crafts, discovering how materials can be transformed into something new and purposeful.

The Nursery children further developed their understanding of upcycling by working with recycled materials to create useful and creative items. Through activities such as making braided bracelets and adorable egg carton crafts, they experienced how discarded materials could be repurposed while developing their creativity, fine motor skills, and appreciation for sustainable practices.

The Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2 children focused on wildlife conservation, with an emphasis on protecting Singapore’s native otters. Through learning about otter habitats, their role in the ecosystem, and ways to care for wildlife, the children gained awareness of the importance of coexisting with animals and protecting the natural environment. They learned that even small actions, such as keeping waterways clean and respecting wildlife spaces, can contribute to conservation efforts.

SSDB x Term 2 Exhibition

The meaningful learning experiences from the June Holiday programme served as a foundation for our Term 2 Exhibition cum SSDB workshop held on 11 July 2026. Parents were invited into the school to witness the children's learning journey and participate in a variety of upcycling stations thoughtfully prepared by the teachers and children. Through hands-on activities, families worked together to transform recyclable and pre-loved materials into creative and purposeful creations, strengthening their understanding of sustainability practices. This parental workshop provided an opportunity for children to share their knowledge and take ownership of their learning while building confidence through meaningful interactions with their families. It also fostered stronger home-school partnerships by encouraging parents to engage in sustainability efforts alongside their children, reinforcing the message that small collective actions can create a positive impact on our environment.

Mandai Wildlife Reserves (Mandai Action for Wildlife Programme)

Our Kindergarten 1 and 2 children participated in the Mandai Action for Wildlife Programme, where they developed a deeper appreciation and understanding of wildlife conservation. Through engaging activities and meaningful discussions, the children learned about the importance of protecting otters, preserving habitats, and how their everyday actions can contribute towards caring for the natural world. The programme encouraged children to become young advocates for wildlife by inspiring them to make responsible choices and take small steps towards creating a more sustainable environment. Through this experience, the children discovered that everyone, regardless of age, has a role to play in protecting and conserving wildlife.

Building on their learning from the Mandai Action for Wildlife Programme, the Kindergarten 1 children extended their understanding of wildlife conservation through a learning journey to the zoo. During the visit, the children had the opportunity to observe animals in a real-world setting, deepen their knowledge about otters, and learn more about the importance of protecting wildlife and their natural habitats. The experience allowed them to make meaningful connections between what they learned in school and the conservation efforts carried out in a wider community.

As a culmination of their learning journey, the K1 children proudly showcased their completed project on otter conservation at Mandai Wildlife Reserve. Through their presentation, the children shared their knowledge and creative ideas on how everyone can play a part in protecting otters and preserving the environment. This meaningful platform empowered the children to become young advocates for wildlife conservation while building their confidence, communication skills, and sense of responsibility towards caring for the natural world.

Through our Start Small Dream Big journey, the children have experienced the meaningful impact of small actions through sustainability efforts, community outreach, upcycling initiatives, and wildlife conservation experiences. Each activity provided opportunities for them to develop empathy, creativity, and a sense of responsibility towards the environment and the community around them. With the support of our families, community partners, and teachers, the children discovered that they too can be active contributors in creating a more sustainable future.

As we reflect on this journey, we celebrate not only the projects completed but also the values nurtured within each child — the courage to care, the confidence to share, and the understanding that every small effort matters. Through SSDB, our children have learned that making a difference does not always require grand actions; it begins with a simple step taken with a caring heart.
