As part of our Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) 2026 initiative, our Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2 children will embark on a meaningful inquiry project titled "A Day in the Life of an Urban Farmer / Environmentalist."
This project was inspired by the children's growing curiosity about healthy eating and their desire to care for their families and the environment. During class discussions, the children learned about the importance of eating fresh vegetables and began wondering whether Singapore has local farms that grow food for our community. Their questions led to a deeper inquiry into how food is grown, where it comes from, and how everyone can contribute towards a more sustainable future.
Through authentic learning experiences, including visits to Garden By The Bay andd local urban farms, hands-on planting activities, and interactions with members of the community, the children developed an appreciation of the important role urban farmers and environmentalists play in strengthening Singapore's food security and caring for Mother Nature.
Project Objectives Through this project, children: • Develop an understanding of Singapore's food security by exploring urban farming and sustainable food production. • Appreciate the importance of supporting local farmers and understand how buying locally grown produce contributes to a resilient and sustainable food system. • Develop environmental awareness by learning how sustainable farming practices help care for our planet. • Build an awareness of basic entrepreneurship and market literacy, including planning, selling, and interacting respectfully with customers. • Develop an early understanding of profit and loss (P&L) by exploring how businesses earn income and manage expenses. • Learn about food safety, hygiene, and proper food handling when preparing and selling fresh produce. • Develop communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and decision-making skills through authentic, hands-on experiences.
The project will culminate in "Our Farmer's Market," where our young entrepreneurs, our Little Towkays, proudly operate a vegetable stall at Temasek Shophouse. The children will apply what they have learned by marketing and selling fresh, locally grown hydroponic vegetables to members of the community.
More importantly, this fundraising activity will support a local urban farm while enabling fresh vegetables to be donated to families in need. Through this meaningful act of giving, the children will experience first-hand how small acts of kindness can make a positive difference in the lives of others. This project embodies the spirit of Start Small Dream Big by empowering children to become compassionate citizens who care for their community and the environment. Through this journey, we hope our children will discover that every small action matters. By learning, caring, and taking action together, they can contribute to building a greener, healthier, and more sustainable Singapore—one harvest at a time.
